Comparison: Punch CNG vs Altroz CNG

Tata Motors has recently introduced CNG versions of its well-known hatchbacks, the Altroz. Both the Punch and Altroz CNG models provide excellent performance, features, safety, and boot space, along with the advantage of reduced running expenses and emissions. However, when it comes to selecting between the two, which one should you opt for? Let’s analyze them based on several crucial factors to determine the answer.

Performance

The Punch CNG and the Altroz CNG have the same 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine, which can operate in both petrol and CNG modes. However, the power and torque output vary depending on the type of fuel used. The following table illustrates the comparison:

The Punch CNG has a greater power output in both petrol and CNG modes compared to the Altroz CNG. However, the Altroz CNG has a slightly higher torque output in CNG mode than the Punch CNG. Both vehicles offer a 5-speed manual gearbox as a transmission option.

Features

Both the Punch CNG and the Altroz CNG are equipped with various features that enhance comfort and convenience while driving. Some of the shared features include power steering, power windows, air conditioner, heater, adjustable steering, central locking, anti-lock braking system, driver and passenger airbags, LED DRLs, and projector headlamps. However, there are also some exclusive features for each car. The Punch CNG offers a touch screen infotainment system, automatic climate control, engine start/stop button, glove box cooling, drive modes (Eco and City), and a rear flat floor. On the other hand, the Altroz CNG comes with an electric sunroof, leatherette seats, rear AC vents, an armrest for the second row, a height-adjustable driver seat, and auto-folding ORVMs.

Safety

Safety is a top priority for both the Punch CNG and the Altroz CNG, as they are both built on Tata’s ALFA Architecture platform, which ensures strong structural rigidity and crash protection. They share some common safety features, including a micro switch, thermal incident protection, leak detection system, child safety locks, and power door locks. However, there are also some differences in their safety features. The Punch CNG has disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear, as well as fog lights at the front. On the other hand, the Altroz CNG has disc brakes at all four wheels, rain sensing wipers, and a rear window wiper, washer, and defogger.

Boot space

The concern for CNG car buyers regarding boot space has been addressed by Tata Motors in their Punch CNG and Altroz CNG models. These cars have been cleverly designed to minimize the compromise on boot space. They utilize a twin-cylinder technology, with two 30-litre cylinders placed below the luggage carpet in the boot. This design also allows for the spare wheel to be moved under the boot floor. As a result, both cars offer a decent boot space of 150 litres in CNG mode, which is comparable to some petrol-only rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Swift (268 litres) and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios (260 litres).

In summary

In conclusion, both the Punch CNG and the Altroz CNG are great options for buyers seeking a CNG car that offers performance, features, safety, and boot space while maintaining style and comfort. However, the choice between the two ultimately depends on your budget and personal preferences. If you prioritize a more powerful, spacious, and feature-rich CNG car that can handle various terrains and driving modes, the Punch CNG may be the better option. On the other hand, if you value affordability, efficiency, a sunroof, improved braking, and rear comfort, the Altroz CNG may be the preferred choice.
